Chimpanzee Attack Woman

Chimpanzee attack woman makes small progress after seven hours of surgery

Charla Nash, who was brutally attacked and disfigured by a friend’s chimpanzee this week in Connecticut, was transferred on Thursday to the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, the hospital that performed the world’s first near-total face transplant.Ms. Nash, 55, who had been listed in critical but stable condition at Stamford Hospital in Connecticut, arrived at the Cleveland Clinic just after 4 p.m., after being flown on the clinic’s private critical-care airplane, a clinic spokeswoman said.
Ms. Nash underwent more than seven hours of surgery by four teams of surgeons at Stamford Hospital. Because of privacy laws, officials would not comment on Ms. Nash’s course of treatment. But her admission to the Cleveland Clinic indicates that a face transplant, a highly experimental procedure, is among the considerations.
In December, a team of surgeons at the clinic performed the first near-total face transplant on a woman who wishes to remain unidentified. After finding a cadaver donor, the surgeons replaced 80 percent of the woman’s face and underlying bone and tissues. The operation took place only after the woman had undergone multiple reconstructive procedures over several years.
A face transplant would be a last resort for the victim of the chimpanzee attack because of its experimental nature and the difficulty in finding a donor.
The victim of Monday’s attack by a chimpanzee showed small signs of progress yesterday after undergoing more than seven hours of surgery on her face and hands by four teams of surgeons at Stamford Hospital, Connecticut.
